MEDFORD, Mass. – Sophomore Ryan O’Keefe scored 21 points as Tufts University ended Bates College’s 16-game winning streak with a 91-76 victory in NESCAC men’s basketball action Saturday.

The Bobcats (19-3) had a strong start and led 8-2 three minutes into the game on a jumper by Rob Stockwell, who had 20 points and hauled down 18 rebounds.

The Jumbos (17-4) used an 8-2 spurt to break a 34-34 tie late in the first half and headed into the break with a 44-41 lead. Tufts narrowly held on to its lead in the first four minutes of the second half before taking control when the Jumbos used a 13-3 run to take a 66-55 advantage at 12:27.

Bates struggled to get back into the game down the stretch, but the Jumbos held tough and denied the Bobcats their 17th straight win. Bryan Wholey led Bates with 21 points, but missed all five of his 3-point attempts. Ray scored 12 points and added six assists in the loss.

Connecticut 76, Bowdoin 58

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Charles Stone dumped in a game-high 20 points and hauled down 17 rebounds to lead Connecticut College to a 76-58 victory over Bowdoin in NESCAC men’s basketball action Saturday.

The Camels (12-10) pounded the ball inside to Stone in the early going to put together an 8-0 run over a span of three minutes to set the tone. Jeff Young, Billy Karis and Will Lyons contributed 13 points apiece for Connecticut.

The Polar Bears (13-8) countered the Camels with a 9-3 run during the first half to cut the lead to 36-31 at halftime. But the Camels seized control of the contest midway through the second half on a 15-0 run to assure victory at the final buzzer.

Kyle Petrie notched a team-high 17 points for the Polar Bears, while teammate Andrew Hippert posted 12.

Colby 83, Wesleyan 69

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Nick Farrell scored a collegiate-high 32 points and Drew Cohen had a double-double to lead Colby to an 83-69 win over Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.

Farrell shot 10-for-14 from the field, including a 5-of-7 effort from 3-point range for the Mules (8-13). He also tossed 7-for-8 from the free-throw line and pulled down seven rebounds. Cohen nearly had a triple-double with 24 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocked shots with three assists.

Western Connecticut 74, USM 70

DANBURY, Conn. – Jamie Procino and Jamaal Robinson combined for seven points in double overtime as Western Connecticut defeated the University of Southern Maine 74-70 in overtime in a men’s basketball game.

Robinson finished with 15 points and Procino connected for 14. Greg Cole led all scorers with 18 points as the Colonials improved to 12-9 overall and 4-6 in the Little East Conference.

Southern Maine’s Bill Hardwick sent the game into the extra session by draining a jump shot with just 19 seconds left in regulation. He led the Huskies (10-11, 3-7) with 15 points while Josh Daniels and Walter Phillips each contributed 13 points.

Women’s basketball

Bates 78, Tufts 47

LEWISTON – Junior center Meg Coffin scored a game-high 22 points as Bates bounced back from an early 18-8 deficit to send Tufts University packing with a 78-47 win in NESCAC women’s basketball action Saturday.

Sophomore guard Sarah Barton scored eight of her 18 points during a three-minute span of the first half as the Bobcats (15-7) stormed out to a 43-25 lead by halftime. Coffin also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and came up with three assists, three blocked shots and two steals.

Sophomore center Khalilah Ummah of Litchfield led the Jumbos (8-12) with 12 points and eight boards off the bench. Junior forward Libby Park added 11 points and seven rebounds in the losing effort.

USM 61, Western Connecticut 43

GORHAM – Megan Myles tossed in 15 points and hauled down 11 rebounds as the University of Southern Maine cruised to a 61-43 win over Western Connecticut in a Little East Conference women’s basketball game Saturday.

Ashley Marble led the Huskies (19-1 overall, 10-0 in LEC) with 20 points. The Huskies led 31-14 by halftime and held the Colonials to just six field goals on 26 attempts in the first half.

Bowdoin 76, Connecticut 41

BRUNSWICK – Junior Julia Loonin connected on her first five 3-point attempts and scored a game-high 21 points to lead Bowdoin to a 76-41 rout over Connecticut College in women’s basketball action Saturday.

The Polar Bears (18-2) extend the nation’s longest home-court winning streak to 67 games and clinch a first-round NESCAC home game with the win. Loonin carried the Polar Bears in the first half and outscored the Camels (8-14) by herself, 21-18, in the opening frame as Bowdoin cruised to a 47-18 lead at intermission.

Strong play off the bench from senior Lauren Withey supplied nine points and eight rebounds, while first-year Jill Anelauskas provided 17 points and eight boards for the bulk of the second half work. Eileen Flaherty reached double-digits as well, scoring 15 for the Polar Bears.

The Camels were led by Katy Serafin, who scored 14 points and hauled down 14 rebounds, while Devon Kerons pitched in with nine points.

Binghamton 69, Maine 64

VESTAL, N.Y. – Laine Kurpniece drained 20 points to lead Binghamton University to a 69-64 victory over the University of Maine in women’s basketball action Saturday.

Binghamton (13-7) executed a balanced attack to take a 31-24 halftime lead. Laura Sario contributed 13 points in the winning effort.

The Black Bears (6-14) had four players in double digits, while Bracey Barker notched a game-high 21 points. Ashley Underwood collected 14 points, while Abby Schrader tossed in 12 and Margaret Elderton added 10.

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin 5, Hamilton 2

BRUNSWICK – Mike Westerman ignited a four-goal second period as Bowdoin earned a 5-2 win over Hamilton in men’s hockey action Saturday.

Westerman’s tally tied the game at 1-1 just 1:48 into the period. Mike Chute and Jon Landry followed with power-play goals just 49 seconds apart for the Polar Bears (13-5-2). Matt Roy closed the period with a short-handed goal. Hamilton’s Chris Clarkson and Bowdoin’s Tim McVaugh traded scores in the final period.

Erik Kallio staked the Continentals (10-9-1) to a 1-0 lead with a goal 7:38 into the opening frame. George Papachristopoulos stopped 32 shots to earn the win. Matt Crowson made 29 saves for Hamilton.

UNH 7, Maine 4

ORONO – Brett Hemingway scored a pair of goals Saturday, one night after he and seven teammates sat out as part of a suspension, as New Hampshire defeated Maine 7-4.

Greg Collins and Hemingway scored goals less than a minute apart late in the second period to put New Hampshire (14-10-4, 10-6-3 Hockey East) up 3-0.

Hemingway added his second goal with just three seconds to play in the second period, not long after Maine’s Greg Moore had cut the Wildcats lead to 3-1.

After New Hampshire’s Josh Ciocco scored a short-handed goal 2:22 into the third to make it 5-1, Maine (18-10, 11-8 Hockey East) got goals from Moore and Jon Jankus to cut the Wildcats lead to 5-3.

Maine pulled its goaltender late in the third period and Billy Ryan scored with 1:26 remaining to pull his team within a goal. But the empty net bit the Black Bears, as Jacob Micflikier answered with a pair of empty net goals in the final minute. Micflikier also assisted on both of Hemingway’s goals.
