NORWAY – Road Committee members have selected the roads they think should be fixed this year with the remaining money from the town’s $1 million road-improvement bond.

Town Manager David Holt said before a final decision is made on which roads will receive what, the town will hold a public hearing so residents can rally for the roads they believe need the most help.

The hearing date is not set yet, but it will be held soon so jobs can be contracted by spring time.

Choosing roads to touch up is a tough job because there are too many roads in poor condition and not enough money to fix them all, Holt said.

“We have to make choices to spread the money around,” Holt said. “So more people get some benefit from it.”

A little more than half of the $1 million bond that voters approved last summer is still available, Holt said.

The committee has recommended nine roads for work this spring and summer, including pavement overlays for Morrill, Brackett, Round the Pond, Crockett Ridge and Yagger roads. An overlay is a second layer of pavement.

Town Farm Road, Watson, Wiley and Yagger roads would have more-intensive work, in which the top layer is ground up and smoothed over. They would also receive new pavement.

The town would also do some ditching.

The total cost for reconditioning the roads is estimated at $729,200. What remains in the bond is $549,000, and the rest of the money would come from surplus and road improvement accounts, Holt said.
