Writers Read’

PORTLAND – Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance is continuing its “Writers Read” series on the third Wednesday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m The next one will be Feb. 15.

Writers of all levels are encouraged to gather at the University of Southern Maine’s Glickman Family Library. Each writer is given a three-minute time slot. The event is free and open to the public.

Lehmann named

FARMINGTON – Easter Seals Maine has announced that Linda E. Lehmann has joined the vocational rehabilitation services.

Lehmann has worked with adults with disabilities for more than 25 years in Central New York and, most recently, in Farmington. She is a native of Oneida, N.Y., and moved to the Farmington area 17 years ago. Lehmann is a graduate of Becker Junior College, Worcester, Mass., and attended the University of Maine at Farmington.

She has been a Special Olympics ski and golf coach for many years, and she and her husband, Andrew, recently relocated to Limerick.

Need lobsterers

THOMASTON – Lobster fishermen and women are needed for the 2007 Bachelor Lobstermen of Maine and Lobstering Women of Maine calendars.

The calendars, produced by 4-M Productions of Thomaston, celebrate the independent spirits who fish lobster off the coast.

The fishermen and women depicted in the 2006 calendars represent the entire coast and range in age from high school to an octogenarian.

Writing workshop

PORTLAND – Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance will present “The Business of Writing: Everything You Need to Know about Writing Professionally in Maine” from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at the University of Southern Maine’s Glickman Family Library.

The conference that provides “how to” information from publishers, editors, distributors, marketing professionals and booksellers in Maine.

Explorers reunion

WARWICK, R.I. – The Old Antarctic Explorers Association. will hold its third national symposium/reunion on Aug. 17 to 19. Anyone who has served in Antarctica or visited Antarctica is eligible for full membership and may attend this Reunion. Tanglewood events

LINCOLNVILLE – Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center, a program of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, is marking 25 years of service to Maine youth and adults with the release of the latest catalogue and the announcement of a new summer programs.

Since 1982, Tanglewood has provided affordable environmental education and nature-based experiences to an estimated 80,000 Maine residents. Programs are designed to hook kids’ interest in nature and instill a sense of place that is the foundation for environmental stewardship and lifelong community involvement.

“Eco-venture,” one of the new programs, has an emphasis on community action through environmental awareness. Another program, “Counselor Apprentice,” is for older teens who want to help support counselors in cabins, take on leadership roles and participate in all camp activities.

Scholarships are available for applicants in need.

Seeking properties

PORTLAND – Maine Preservation is seeking nominations from across the state for historic sites and structures that qualify for inclusion on the 11th annual list of Maine’s Most Endangered Historic Properties.

Modeled after the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s “America’s 11 Most Endangered Places” program, Maine Preservation’s list was established in 1996. The purpose is to identify significant historic properties that are threatened by deterioration and demolition in order to raise public awareness and develop partnerships for rescue strategies. The 2006 list will be announced in June.

Forms and submission criteria may be obtained by visiting www.mainepreservation.org or by phoning 775-3652. All submittals must be received no later than April 21 and mailed or delivered to Maine Preservation at 500 Congress St., second floor, Portland, ME 04101.
