TURNER – Property owners with junkyards are being invited to discuss the alleged error of their ways with the Board of Selectmen at the Monday, March 6, regular meeting.

Selectmen Ralph Caldwell and Dennis Richardson both declared “enough is enough” while discussing with Code Enforcement Officer Roger Williams the problems with some 15 or more property owners who have failed to respond or act on correspondence with the town to clean up their act.

“In some instances we’ve been haggling with these people for three or more years,” said Richardson. “Let’s get them in here on March 6, talk about it, and get something done. If they want to bring a lawyer, fine. We need to get these settled.”

At least 18 alleged junkyard operators were informed last July that they had until October to clean up their properties or further action would be taken. The board voted unanimously to have Williams request the property owners involved to meet with the board on March 6, and be prepared to have their issues resolved soon.

In other action, Donald Vickery and Kathryn Norton of Maine Municipal Association’s Risk Management Services were present to answer concerns about volunteer firefighters possibly not being covered under Workers Compensation if injured performing equipment maintenance duties at the fire station. All were relieved to be assured they would be.

• A warrant for town meeting was approved asking for acceptance of Outlook Drive, Wilderness Way and Forest Trail as town roads.

• A used ambulance was purchased with $45,000 from the Rescue Reserve Account. Fire and rescue personnel assured the board that the 2001 vehicle is in excellent shape.

• Action was postponed on a Solid Waste Committee recommendation to buy a truck to haul waste from the transfer station, a purchase the committee claimed would pay for itself in three years.

“This is an extremely tight budget year,” Caldwell said. He suggested the board postpone action until the Budget Committee considers the request at its meeting later this week.
