AUBURN – Police from a half-dozen agencies are searching for a Sabattus man accused of writing bad checks to pay for all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles and other items.
Investigators say Robert Fain, 48, of Glenview Drive, has paid for goods with bogus checks so far totaling more than $60,000. A warrant has been issued charging negotiating a worthless instrument.
Businesses in Lewiston, Auburn, Topsham and Lisbon have been the victims of the check scam, as have others in New Hampshire and Florida.
Police in Topsham said Fain recently wrote a bad check for $13,000 at a business in that city to pay for a pair of ATVs.
Androscoggin County Sheriff’s detectives are looking for Fain in connection with the purchase of a snowmobile, again with a check with no funds to cover it.
Investigators are asking that anyone with information about Fain phone their local police department.
