TORONTO (AP) – Dieter Kochan made 34 saves to take Portland to an 8-2 victory Friday over Toronto. The Pirates claimed an early lead when Derek Edwardson scored on a power play. Ryan Shannon followed with another goal at 7:09 to put Portland ahead 2-0.

Ladislav Smid and Joel Perrault also scored in the first period. Pierre Pareanteau’s goal in the second period gave the Pirates a 5-0 lead. Toronto scored on a power play goal by Roman Kukumberg. Aaron Gavey closed the second period scoring at the 18:08 mark.

In the final period, Curtis Glencross and Geoff Peters added goals to continue to the triumph over Toronto to give the Pirates the 8-1 lead.

Brett Engelhart scored Toronto’s second goal at 19:20.

Toronto goaltenders Jean-Sabastien Aubin and Jean Francois Racine combined for 20 saves in the loss.
