ORWELL, Vt. (AP) – Vermont’s smallest and oldest bank had its second robbery Monday – the last one was in 1900.
The First National Bank of Orwell was closed Monday morning after a man described as a white male in his 20s, five feet, eight or nine inches tall with dark hair and facial hair entered the bank and demanded that a teller give him money.
“He basically came into the bank passed a note to the teller asking for money,” said Lt. Dave Covell of the Vermont State Police. “The teller gave the person the money and he left the bank.”
Authorities said the man did not display a weapon during the robbery.
Roger Young, whose family has owned the bank since 1863, said he expected the robbery would be the talk of the village for some time.
He noted the 1900 robber was never caught. “We haven’t found that guy, so when are we going to find this guy? Don’t know.”
Police said the man drove away in a red pickup truck or SUV, possibly with Virginia plates.
