HARTFORD – Two Hardford brothers were injured late Monday night when the car they were in ran a stop sign on Route 219 and slammed into a tree, police said.

John Patterson, 36, and his brother, David Patterson, 29, both of Hartford, were taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, investigating Deputy Mike Halacy said early Tuesday evening.

Halacy said John Patterson, who was driving his brother’s 1992 Chevrolet Beretta, complained of chest pain and a possible broken left foot. He was unsure about David Patterson’s injuries. Both were treated and released, a nursing supervisor said.

Both men were wearing safety belts.

Halacy said the Pattersons were driving west at 11:40 p.m. on Route 219 from Turner when they came to a stop sign at a T-intersection with Route 140, by Bim’s Garage.

“Speed played a major factor,” he said.

“They were complaining about a brakes’ malfunction, but evidence at the scene showed that the tires locked up at least 70 feet up from Route 140. They never stopped skidding,” Halacy added.

The car skidded 30 feet off the road across the property of Ike Berge at 1307 Main St. before striking the tree nearly head-on. The impact crushed the front end in “at least 18 inches,” he said.

Halacy estimated damage to the car at $15,000.
