REDINGTON TOWNSHIP – A state land use commission announced Tuesday it has accepted an application for rezoning 1,004 acres for the purpose of developing a wind farm atop mountains in northern Franklin County.

Maine Mountain Power LLC, comprised of Endless Energy Corp. and Edison Mission Group, filed the 1,600-page draft application with Maine Land Use Regulation Commission in December after years of preparing to do so.

Commission staff member Marcia Spencer-Famous said Tuesday that Maine Mountain Power revised the application in response to staff comments.

Commission staff determined the application was determined to be complete on Feb. 8.

“We’ve accepted the application to start review,” Spencer-Famous said.

The proposal for the $130-million project is to erect 30 wind turbines atop Black Nubble and Redington Pond Range Mountains in Redington Township in Northern Franklin County. It is about 4 miles west of Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabassett Valley. Utility lines and access roads are also part of the project.

Staff were working Tuesday to put the application on the Web site, Spencer-Famous said. She expects it to be available within a day or two, she said, for people to view along with information concerning the review process. It will be is available online at www.maine.gov/doc/lurc/projects/redington.html.

The commission plans to provide the opportunity for public scrutiny of this proposal during the course of the review. A formal public review and comment period will also be established as part of the commission’s review process. The commission will host one or more hearings to gather oral and written testimony from the public about the proposal.
