NEW GLOUCESTER – A 16-inch candlestick is missing from the communion table at New Gloucester Congregational Church and police are investigating.

The Rev. Linda Gard said Thursday that the candlestick, one of a pair, was taken from the altar between 5 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. on Sunday.

“It feels to us the candles lit on our communion table are not ornaments, but symbolize the presence of God. God is still present, but our traditional reminder is gone and that is our loss,” she said.

The candlesticks were given in memory of Henry Hooper in 1960 by his daughter.

The head of the church’s property committee, Don Keneagy, said, “The taking of the candlestick from the church’s house of worship is hard to understand in this day and age.” The cost of replacement is roughly $400, he said.

The church is asking that anyone with information contact the church at 926-3260 or the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department at (800) 501-1111.
