AUBURN – Child molestation suspect Edward Fitzherbert was returned to jail Thursday after a brief bail hearing in Androscoggin County Superior Court.

Two days after creating a standoff outside St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, the 61-year-old Poland man was ordered held without bail. He is now awaiting trial on three counts of gross sexual assault, two counts of assault and one of unlawful sexual contact.

Those charges stem from allegations that Fitzherbert molested a young girl over a period of months. No trial date has been set.

He was expected to appear in court Tuesday for trial when he drove to St. Mary’s instead and held a gun to his head. Nobody was hurt during the hour-long standoff.
