Well, at least Kristin Cavallari will always have “Laguna Beach.” But her network-TV coming out “Party” looks to be over a scant two weeks after it began.
UPN has pulled the plug on unscripted show “Get This Party Started” after just two airings, following a barely-there ratings performance on Tuesday. It will be gone for at least the rest of February, and its chances of returning are probably slim.
The show, hosted by Cavallari and Ethan Erickson, aimed to mine the same feel-good vein of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” by having professional party planners throw a bash for deserving people in honor of a significant event in their lives. Viewers, however, declined to RSVP.

In its Feb. 7 premiere, “Get This Party Started” drew only about 1.7 million viewers. This week, airing opposite the Winter Olympics and Fox’s “House,” the show could scare up only a little over a million viewers. Its adults 18-49 rating was an equally puny 0.4.
UPN will air the Martin Lawrence movie “Black Knight” in place of “Party” on Feb. 21. Reruns of last fall’s “America’s Next Top Model” finale, “Girlfriends” and “Half & Half” will fill the night the following week.
ODDSMAKERS INSTALL ACE, KATHARINE AS “IDOL’ FAVORITES
With “American Idol” moving into its public-voting phase next week, online bookies have begun laying odds on the 24 semifinalists. If the oddsmakers are right, we could be headed for an Ace Young-Katharine McPhee showdown sometime in late May.
Online gaming site PinnacleSports.com has the 25-year-old Young as the early favorite, with odds of 7 to 2 to become “Idol’s” first male champion since 2003. McPhee is right behind at 4/1, and another early favorite, 17-year-old Paris Bennett, is a 5/1 chance to take home the title.
British bookie Paddy Power, meanwhile, has McPhee, a 21-year-old from Los Angeles, and Bennett as co-favorites at 5/1, with Young, Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks and Kellie Pickler close behind at 7/1.
The two oddsmakers disagree sharply on the chances for Jose “Sway” Penala and Melissa McGhee. Paddy Power has Penala at 8/1 and McGhee at 14/1. Their odds are much longer on Pinnacle’s board, though, with Penala at 29/1 and McGhee among a group of longshots at 65/1.
Neither seems to like the chances of 16-year-old Kevin Covais, who sits at the bottom of the list on both counts.
“American Idol” begins its semifinal rounds on Tuesday with performances by the 12 female singers. The guys follow on Wednesday, and two from each group will be sent home during a live results show Thursday. The process repeats for two weeks after that to determine the final 12.
“BATTLESTAR GALACTICA’ EXPANDS SEASON FINALE
The end of “Battlestar Galactica’s” second season will come a little later than expected.
A half-hour later, to be exact. The Sci Fi Channel series will extend its season finale to 90 minutes-although the network says that still won’t be enough time to resolve the show’s myriad plot threads.
The finale, scheduled for March 10, will revolve around a coming election pitting current President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) and Gaius Baltar (James Callis), whom Roslin believes to be a Cylon collaborator (she’s right, of course).
Complicating matters is the discovery by the Galactica crew of a planet that appears able to support human life, which forces the candidates to consider whether they should abandon their search for planet Earth. With sentiment swinging toward the Baltar camp, Roslin ponders drastic action.
Sci Fi is already teasing a cliffhanger ending, so chances are fans of the show won’t see the full impact of the president’s decision.
“Battlestar Galactica” has become one of Sci Fi’s most popular series since its October 2004 premiere (following a 2003 miniseries). The show, which regularly draws 3 million or more viewers, has also gathered a fair share of critical praise.
Production on season three is scheduled to begin in the spring.
