Astronomy meeting

CUMBERLAND – Southern Maine Astronomers will host a public meeting, “How to Photograph the Night Sky,” at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the Congregational Church, Cumberland Center. Horse business and safety clinic

ORONO – University of Maine Cooperative Extension, the UMaine Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, and the Risk Management Agency will conduct a clinic on horse industry business and safety from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at Stodder Commons, UMaine Campus.

Breeders, trainers, boarding stable owners and volunteer instructors will learn about insurance needs for those involved with horse businesses, relevant tax laws, how to track business expenses and how to implement a safety program to minimize accidents.

Registration is $15 for adults and $8 for students and it covers lunch, refreshments and printed materials. Door prizes will be drawn. A limited number of scholarships are available. Preregistration is recommended.

Ag scholarship applications

AUGUSTA – The Agricultural Committee of the Maine State Grange is accepting applications for its agricultural scholarship.

To be eligible, applicants must be Maine residents pursuing a career in agriculture or an agriculture-related field.

Applications are available online at http://www.mainestategrange.org/ag or may be requested by calling Maine State Headquarters at 1-800-464-3421. All applications must be completed and postmarked by April 30. Winners will be notified in writing by June 1.

The winner will be awarded $500 after the completion of the first semester at the post-secondary level provided that grades are satisfactory for continuation in the chosen field of study.

Center seeks crafts artists

ROCKPORT – The Center for Maine Contemporary Art is seeking fine crafts artists to participate in the “Work of the Hand” annual crafts show and sale from Oct. 6 to 15. This year the show is open to artists from other New England states, as well as artists who are full or part-time Maine residents.

Golf scholarships available

AUGUSTA – The American Lung Association of Maine will award three Golf Privilege Card scholarships to deserving high school seniors in Maine.

The scholarships are awarded based on the graduating student’s academic achievement, financial need, references and a completed application.

In order to qualify, students must plan to pursue their higher education in a medical or health-related field and have involvement with the game of golf either as a player or as an employee of a golf related business.

The golf card costs $70 and offers free or substantially reduced greens fees at more than 80 golf courses throughout Maine; it also includes driving ranges and more than two dozen courses in New Hampshire and eastern Canada.

Proceeds support the work of the American Lung Association of Maine.

ACT testing registration

College-bound high school students can take the ACT Assessment on April 8, the next nationwide test date.

The registration postmark deadline is Friday, March 3. Late registration postmark deadline is March 17. The cost is $29 without and $43 with the writing test (an additional $18 fee is required for late registration).

Students can receive registration information from their high school guidance counselors or they can register on ACT’s Web site at www.actstudent.org.

The site also features test tips, practice tests, online test prep and a database for students to find out if a prospective college requires a writing score.
