LEWISTON – Students at McMahon Elementary School have been making valentines for veterans in Togus, Iraq and a German hospital. Pictures, thoughtful messages and colorful paper were all meant to “lift their spirit.”

Jerry DeWitt coordinated the program, and the McMahon staff responded to the request by having the students share their artistic talents with the veterans.

Eric Lynes, Red Cross director, presented certificates to school Principal Althea Walker and to the students.

The school is named in honor of Thomas J. McMahon, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor and 13 other medals besides several letters of commendation, including one from President Richard Nixon. He was awarded the highest award for military valor.
