LEWISTON – The University of Southern Maine is sponsoring an information session and open house for the master of occupational therapy program at its Lewiston-Auburn campus.

The informal event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28. There will be opportunities to meet with faculty and students, gain information about the program, curriculum and admissions requirements, and a question and answer forum.

Applications for fall admission to the program are being accepted. Candidates must have completed a bachelor’s degree in any discipline at a regionally accredited college or university.

Other admissions requirements, including program prerequisites, will be explained in detail at the open house. For students who have not yet attended college, the program’s “Jump Start” option is available and will also be discussed. The option enables students to obtain their baccalaureate and master degrees at USM/L-A in five years.

The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy of the American Occupational Therapy Association. It is an entry-level graduate program that may be completed in two years on a full-time basis, or three to four years part-time. The council granted reaccreditation to the program for a 10-year period, which is the longest time period for reaccreditation.

In addition, 95 percent of the graduates of the program over the last five years have passed the national certification exam, compared to a national average of 81 percent.

The information session will be conducted by Roxie Black, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the program.

Anyone interested in learning more about and/or pursuing a career in occupational therapy is encouraged to attend. The free session, open to the public, will be held in Room 164 at USM/Lewiston-Auburn, 51 Westminster St. Light refreshments will be served.

Those who wish to attend or obtain more information are asked to contact the program’s administrative assistant, Luisa Scott, at 753-6523 or lscott@usm.maine.edu. Directions to the college are available at www.usm.maine.edu/lac/info/directions.html.
