OXFORD – Mandy Ivey, daughter of Oxford Selectman David Ivey and Anne Ivey and a senior at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, was honored at the Board of Selectmen’s Feb. 16 meeting for her outstanding achievement in athletics and academics.
Selectman Dennis Sanborn thought of recognizing her. It marks the first time the board has honored a local student.
Ivey said she was pleasantly surprised. “I didn’t even know they gave one out, so it was really nice,” she said during the meeting. “I didn’t know I was getting this until the day before; my dad told me I had to show up.”
“She is a tremendously hard worker but the key is, she has fun,” said dad, David. “I’m proud of her, particularly her academic achievements.”
Ivey, 18, has maintained a 95.6 average and ranks 13th in the 2006 graduating class at OHCHS. She received an early decision from Colby College in Waterville, and will start her freshman year in August.
Ivey said she plans to continue as a competitive cross country runner and Nordic skier at Colby.
Last month Ivey was named the Sun Journal’s 2005 girls cross country runner of the year.
Ivey has been named to the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference All Conference three times for cross country running and won the 2005 Maine Cross Country Festival of Champions race in Belfast last October.
She holds the 3,200 meter record at OHCHS and has broken her record the last two years.
In Nordic skiing, Ivey has twice been state champion, Class A Nordic Freestyle, and has twice been state champion, Class A Nordic Classic.
She has competed three times in the KVAC All Conference in Nordic skiing, and in 2005 she made the New England Junior Olympic Nordic Ski team.
