On Thanksgiving day this year, my family and I worked at a breakfast place called the Slamma. We served meals for people who either couldn’t afford a turkey or people who just would have been alone on Thanksgiving day. The serving lasted for about an hour and a half. My sister, Tiana, who is eight, and I took orders. My dad was the cook and he cooked very well and very fast. My mom helped with the dishes and she helped if Tiana needed her for something. There was an estimated 137 people served that day. All the people that we served were very nice. My sister got some tips because she’s so young and the people thought it was nice to see her out and helping the neighborhood at her age. It felt really good to be able to help my neighborhood in such a big way. I think my family will do this again next year.

After the serving was over, we had some left over goods like turkey, stuffing, carrots, and other great foods. We called the city people and asked what time the city snow plow people had a break from snow plowing. When we finally found the snow plow people we got together about 50 more meals and we served them to the plow people. It was just a little treat for helping out and clearing the icy roads.

So my family spent our Thanksgiving at the Slamma and we had no time to eat turkey. We got together the Sunday after Thanksgiving and had our turkey. Man was it good! My Thanksgiving was great and it was even better than most people’s because I spent my time that I could have wasted on thinking about myself and I helped my neighborhood! It felt great because all the people seemed like they appreciated what we were doing for them. A lot of the families liked getting together and eating with other people on Thanksgiving. It was a great experience and I hope my family and I do it again next year!
