TURNER – Selectmen donated a very used ambulance to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday night. They also voted to send to town meeting a request from that department to hire the school resource officer for summer duty in the community.

Two weeks ago, the board purchased an ambulance for Turner Rescue. Tuesday night, the board disposed of the old one, which could no longer be used for transport, by giving it to the Sheriff’s Department where it will be used by the diving unit as a truck for equipment.

For three school years, beginning in the fall of 2002, SAD 52 had hired a school resource officer under a federal grant. This school year, the school directors hired and paid for the officer from district funds, when the grant expired. For the summer, the district decided to ask selectmen in the three towns if they might be interested in hiring the officer for eight weeks in July and August, at a cost of $8,426.

Some selectmen felt the officer might be helpful at the public beach, could provide traffic control for highway crews doing summer maintenance work, do road patrols at selected problem sites and provide a preventive presence. Others thought more than $1,000 a week was just too much money.

The board then voted to send the question to voters at town meeting.

Selectmen were advised by Town Clerk Eva Leavitt that the following candidates have filed petitions and will appear on the April 7 town meeting ballot for:

• Selectmen, two positions for three-year terms: Daniel R. Dimambro, Lawrence House, Charlie B. Mock and Angelo Terreri.

• SAD 52 board director, two positions for three-year terms, Elizabeth F. Bullard, and one one-year term, Harris L. Bradeen.

• Budget Committee members for three three-year terms: Rodney Shaw, Ronald L. Harris and Robert A. Levesque. One position on the school board for a three-year term will require a write-in.

Selectmen also review warrants drafted for the town meeting and agreed to pass along to voters the same recommendations on all expenditures as the Budget Committee has made.
