President Bush wants us to stress math and science in our schools. I question his wisdom. Most jobs don’t require a person to solve quadratic equations or figure moments of inertia. Those things have their uses, but they won’t make a person successful.

To be truly successful, a person needs to be happy.

It’s true, having enough money is important, but try being happy if you’re in pain and have poor health; if all you have in life is your job; if you can’t relate to other people, or if your life is drab, dull and without joy.

To be happy, you must learn to keep fit and in good health.

To be happy, you must learn to have fun by enjoying hobbies and sports, or you’ll only have your job.

To be happy, you must learn to interact with other people, or you will be sad and alone.

To be happy, you must understand the beauty and joys in life as recounted in art, music and literature, or life will be drab, dull and without joy.

Those things are important. They are more important than math and science. Those things should be stressed, taught and funded in our schools.
