Want to play it safe this winter, but don’t know how? We put some popular ice and snow grippers to the test for sure footing.

It’s been a mild winter, but it’s not over yet – we’re all familiar with those late storms in March. In light of the mixes of snow, slush and ice that may still befall our sidewalks, roads and favorite hiking trails in the coming weeks, we decided to do a late-season review of snow and ice grips made to be slipped over the bottom of flat shoes, sneakers or boots for traction.

We obtained running and walking models of gripping slip-ons made by 32north of Biddeford, Sure Foot Corp. of North Dakota and Yaktrax of Washington state. We’ll start with our favorites, but stay tuned for the pluses and minuses of each. Also keep in mind that an Internet search for something like “shoe traction” or “ice traction shoes” will reveal there are other companies with similar products out there, as well as some additional products by a few of the companies listed here.
