A pair of weekend snowmobile accidents in northern Maine each claimed one life, including a man from Lewiston.

Marc Cloutier, 48, of Lewiston was killed when he went off a trail during a group ride in St. Agathe and slammed into a tree at 12:15 a.m. Saturday.

Cloutier was traveling at a high rate of speed, according to Warden Sgt. Tom Ward, who said the accident remains under investigation.

The second fatality occurred Friday night when William Hasey, 40, of Glenburn was killed when his snowmobile crashed through the ice on Moosehead Lake just north of Rockwood, the Maine Warden Service said.

Hasey’s 18-year-old son, William Jr., also crashed into the water but managed to survive.

Cloutier was a 1976 graduate of Lewiston High School. He is survived by his companion of 23 years, Mary Lou Caouette and their two children, Jayme and Nik.
