MEXICO – Musician and comedian Barney Martin and his band, Coos Canyon, will be among the talents scheduled to perform at an early July celebration and fundraiser for the Mexico Recreation Center.

Martin, now of Scarborough, is a Mexico native and leader of Coos Canyon, a three-guitar band. Along with Martin, Portland musicians Dan Merrill and Brian Johnson comprise Coos Canyon. Martin is also one of the members of the Maine Hysterical Society.

The two-day event, set for July 1 and 2, will be held at the Mexico Recreation Park off Route 17, according to an e-mail from Martin.

Besides Coos Canyon, Bill Chinnock and His All-Star Band, The Don Campbell Band and guitarist Jim Gallant are scheduled to appear.

Matt Gallant, organizer of the Mexico Recreation Park Improvement Committee, said last month that the Motor Booty Affair is also scheduled to perform.

Most of the musical acts will take place Sunday, July 2. On Saturday, July 1, a car exhibit and show will be on display while local bands perform.

Gallant’s committee began meeting to plan for the event in January. He would like to raise enough money to replace the current recreation center in the former Mexico High School on Parker Street.
