PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A 49-year-old Massachusetts man died after jumping into an icy pond to rescue his dog, Rhode Island hospital officials said on Sunday.
Ralph Eaton, of Rehoboth, jumped into the pond behind his house after his dog fell through the ice on Saturday. The dog made it out, but Eaton succumbed to hypothermia while in the water, police said.
His 20-year-old son, David, dragged him into shallow water, while his wife called 911.
Police and paramedics found both men still in the pond when they arrived shortly before noon.
Paramedics treated the Eatons for hypothermia and took them to Rhode Island hospital, where Ralph Eaton died at 4 p.m., officials said.
David Eaton was treated and released.
