I recently came across a piece online about a group of people protesting at the funerals of dead soldiers. I, for one, believe in the Constitution and the First Amendment, but I’m completely disgusted with the forum in which some people choose to express themselves.
A funeral or burial is the last place friends and family have to honor their loved ones. To protest at a funeral, to me, is just incomprehensible.
Those soldiers fought and died for our country, our freedom and our way of life and yet someone feels it necessary to exercise his First Amendment rights by dishonoring the very people who swore to protect and defend him? How can society let that happen? I applaud the efforts of others in their attempts to counter the efforts of the few who choose to express themselves in such a forum.
A funeral is meant as a way of honoring and remembering those we love. It is unfair to take that away from anyone and turn that day into a three-ring circus.
I truly feel for the families of the soldiers who not only have to bury their loved ones, but also deal with ignorant people protesting and carrying signs thanking God for explosive devices.
If a person can’t honor and respect the people who are fighting for his or her rights, then I say, move to another country.
