Lewiston – Donald A. Johnson, 71, Emerson Road, Norway, died Sunday evening, Feb. 26, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Portland, on Sept. 27, 1934, to T. Alfred Johnson and Cora (Gurney) Johnson. Don was raised in the Norway-Paris area, graduating in 1952 from South Paris High School. After his graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy. He retired from the Navy in 1972, returning to Maine. After his retirement, he was employed by Cullinan Oil Co.; he managed the Mobil station at Poland Corner for several years. He then was employed by SAD 17 as a bus driver for several more years.
He enjoyed every aspect of the outdoors from snowmobiling, hiking, biking, kayaking and gardening, plus working up his woodpile. He climbed many of the mountains in Maine and New Hampshire. He also was an accomplished worker of stained glass and enjoyed bridge club friends.
He is survived by three sons, Russell of Limerick, Timothy of Paris and Thomas of Norway, who was his caregiver during the past few years; a brother, George E. of Cromwell, Conn.; a sister, Janice J. Harrington of Monroe, Ga.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by both parents; as well as his elder son, Donald R. of Rhode Island.
Don will be sadly missed by all including his special friends, and of course “Criter.”
