AUBURN – It’s time for a property-tax protest group to begin weighing in on the issues, according to organizers.

“So far, we haven’t picked an issue,” said Deana Chapman, vice chairwoman of the United Citizens of Auburn.

That will change at 6 p.m. today at Auburn Middle School. The group is hosting an all-city meeting, open to group members and city taxpayers. Chapman said the group will hold a series of votes, deciding which local issues it will support.

“Do we support the recall or don’t we?” Chapman said. “Do we support the parking garage or don’t we? We don’t want to alienate anyone, but it’s time to pick sides.”

The group formed in November after property valuation notices were mailed to Auburn taxpayers. Hundreds of people crowded the group’s first meeting at American Legion Post 153 in New Auburn to rally against the revaluation.

Since then, the reformers have named their group, elected a board of directors, adopted bylaws and rules, and purchased liability insurance. Members have attended City Council and School Committee meetings to monitor the city’s fiscal plan.

“We’re going to continue providing information, but now we’re ready to start voicing opinions,” Chapman said.
