BRYANT POND – Edith Mae Andrews Hathaway, 98, of Bryant Pond, died Feb. 28, at her residence.
She was born in Albany Dec. 8, 1907, the oldest daughter of Arthur Abel and Bessie Mae (Grover) Andrews. She graduated from Woodstock High School in 1925. After attending Gorham Normal School summer session, and teaching in the Irish neighborhood of Bethel, she married Harris Elliott Hathaway on June 30, 1928. Mr. Hathaway died in January 1997 after 68 years of marriage.
During their years together, the couple raised three children on their dairy farm where they raised crops for canning factories as well as delivering milk, cream and butter door to door in the village and to busy Birch Villa Inn where Mrs. Hathaway had worked summers waiting on the celebrities who vacationed there. Mrs. Hathaway did the bookkeeping for the family business. They also shipped Christmas trees from their land to Massachusetts, often tying the trees in extreme cold weather.
A superb cook, she is still remembered for the wonderful meals she served to family, farm workers, friends and teachers. During World War II, she corresponded with several young men who had spent summers working on the farm. She continued to remain interested in her family, friends and community, and to enjoy the summertime visits from vacationing nieces, nephews and friends.
At the time of her 90th birthday, Mrs. Hathaway retired from 30 years as treasurer of the Judith Grover Tent 17 of the Daughters of Veterans of the Civil War. She was a past president of the Tent and had served as secretary of the Maine Department.
As a member of Franklin Grange 124, she served as chairman of the supper committees for many years and was matron of the Juvenile Grange (now known as the Junior Grange) for several years before assuming offices in the Subordinate Grange. She and Mr. Hathaway were delegates to the State Grange for many years. During the summers, she made pies for the Albany Church suppers, until her nineties.
