FAYETTE – State police arrested a Farmington vocational school firefighting instructor Monday on a charge of gross sexual assault.

John “Jack” T. Berry, 51, of Fayette is accused of having nonconsensual sex with a Franklin County girl under the age of 18 at his camp in Township E during the first week of December, Maine State Police Detective Mark Lopez said Tuesday.

Berry, who is a firefighting instructor during fall semesters at Foster Regional Applied Technology Center in Farmington, is on administrative leave, SAD 9 Superintendent Michael Cormier said Tuesday.

Berry is on the Livermore Fire Department and retired from the Auburn Fire Department several years ago.

Lopez said the girl disclosed the alleged assault to friends last week, and he conducted an investigation throughout the weekend.

The victim and Berry were known to each other, Lopez said, but he declined to say whether she was a student of Berry’s.

Berry was taken to Franklin County jail Monday and posted $2,500 cash bail that day. He is scheduled to appear March 24 in Franklin County Superior Court.

A message left at Berry’s home was not immediately returned on Tuesday.
