SOUTH PARIS – Martha S. Day, 93, of West Paris, died at Market Square Health Care Center on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

She was born in Otisfield on April 9, 1912, the daughter of Eva A. (Thompson) and Arthur V. Smith.

She graduated from Norway High School in 1928. After graduation, she accepted a job in West Paris in Penley’s office and worked in their accounting department until her retirement.

She was a member of the First Universalist Church of West Paris and served in many capacities including clerk and treasurer. She was active in other community organizations: West Paris Public Library as trustee and Friends of the Library, West Paris Historical Society, local meetings of the Democratic Party, Stephens Memorial Hospital Thrift Shop, Western Maine Art Group and Book Discussion Group of Bethel. She was an avid participant in classes for many years through the Elderhostel program.

Her hobbies were playing the piano and later the organ, oil painting, crossword puzzles and reading, both for enjoyment and always to further enrich her knowledge.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jane Wheeler and her husband, Harvey and Eve Reid and her husband, Lawrence; five granddaughters, one grandson and their spouses, Denise and Keith Virgin, Melissa and Alan de Silva, Holly Reid and James Brown, Bethany and Thomas Serridge and Andrew Reid and Kristina Swanson; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Helvi Smith; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald A. Day in 1973; and her brother, Stanley T. Smith.
