BOSTON (AP) – Wine lovers no longer have to leave unfinished wine at their restaurant tables.

The Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission issued temporary regulations Thursday to put the state’s new re-corking law into effect. The House and Senate approved the measure as part of a larger bill related to Internet wine sales, then last month overrode a veto by Gov. Mitt Romney.

Under the new law, diners can take unfinished portions of wine home without violating the state’s open container law.

The regulations require the restaurant to securely re-cork the bottle and place it in a one-use tamperproof transparent bag to make sure no one can drink it on the way home without breaking open the bag.

The regulations also require the restaurant to supply a receipt showing the date of the meal, including the purchase of the wine. Only one bottle per patron can be carried out.
