AUBURN – The Lewiston Auburn Youth Court heard more than 20 cases last year, most of them for petty theft.

A report recently released by the advisory board chairman shows the nearly 4-year-old court last year handled 16 petty theft cases. It also dealt with two burglaries, and one case each of assault, criminal mischief, receiving stolen property and failure to control fire. For punishment, most youths were assigned to complete community service. Others were told to write letters of apology, write an essay, pay restitution or attend mediation.

The court was started in 2002. Although it was designed to serve both Lewiston and Auburn youths between 11 and 19 years old, only Auburn has greatly participated. Officials hope to change that as Lewiston educators get more involved, according to the report.

In Youth Court, students serve as judges, defense and prosecution. Area children and teenagers can be referred to the court when arrested for minor offenses.
