MOUNT VERNON – Voters elected a new road commissioner Saturday and rejected an article to raise money for a warrant article to buy a new firetruck, selectmen’s Chairman Bruce Inch said Saturday.

In a three-way race for road commissioner newcomer Lee Dunn received 130 votes over long-term incumbent Road Commissioner Jeffrey Kent, who received 121 votes, Inch said. Brett Roberts received 18 votes.

School Director Jay Stockford was re-elected to the board for two years with 140 votes over write-in candidate Don Reiter’s 50 votes.

School Director Malcolm Hardy, who was running uncontested, received 190 votes to serve three more years.

Write-in candidate April Fenton-Hulett also won a three-year term on the school board as well. No one had taken out papers for that seat, Inch said.

Voters elected Debra Baeder as their new selectman, and Town Clerk and Tax Collector Rachel Meader and Treasurer Martha Gross retained their positions.

All articles passed during the two-hour meeting except for the one pertaining to the firetruck, Inch said.

About 85 residents turned out to vote.

Stephen Hayes moderated the meeting.

The most discussion was on the article to raise $3,000 for bond counsel to draw up a warrant article to go before voters in June to buy a new $200,000 firetruck, Inch said.

It was narrowly rejected by a show of hands, he said.

It doesn’t look like there will be a vote on a firetruck this year, he added.

The municipal budget for town government operations only is $865,661 for 2006, an increase of $17,020 from last year.
