NEWTON, N.H. (AP) – A Newton man is in custody after a bizarre series of events in which he is accused of beating his mother and brother, slashing his girlfriend and threatening to kill police officers.
It all started around 8:20 p.m. Friday, when police were called to an apartment for a report of a domestic assault, but left after everyone there assured them nothing had happened.
Police were led to the suspect hours later, when witnesses confirmed there had been an assault and reported that unknown to the officers, while they had been at the apartment, Michael Williams, 22, was hiding inside, armed with a handgun. The witnesses said he had warned them he would shoot the police if they entered.
Police Chief Lawrence Streeter said instead, Williams decided to talk to the two officers, also assuring them nothing had happened.
Streeter said when the witnesses came forward after 2 a.m. Saturday, they told officers Williams had assaulted his mother and brother in the initial incident; pulled the gun on a restaurant patron in Massachusetts later in the evening; then, back at the apartment, hit, kicked and slashed his 18-year-old girlfriend with a knife.
They said they were able to get away and call the police while Williams and the teen were at Exeter Hospital, where she was treated. Police also learned she was there from hospital officials, who called to report they were treating a stabbing victim.
Williams and the teen went back to the apartment from the hospital, and police, concerned for her safety, tried to coax him out.
It didn’t work, and officers called the State Police SWAT team.
“We were concerned, obviously, about the victim,” Streeter said. “He had already hurt her once.”
Occupants of three other apartments were led to safety and police spoke with Williams by telephone, but he refused to come out from about 6 a.m. Saturday until about 1:30 p.m., Streeter said.
“He realized at that point what he was faced with and walked out of the apartment,” the chief said.
Streeter said Williams will be arraigned Monday on charges of assaulting his mother, brother and girlfriend, pulling a gun in the apartment and threatening to kill the officers.
He said there probably would be other charges.
