SABATTUS – Copies of a survey created by the Sabattus Charter Commission to find out what townspeople want in a charter must be returned to the commission by March 16.

The survey can be picked up at the Town Office, Transfer Station or the Sabattus Regional Credit Union. It also can be found online at www.chartercommission.sabattus.net.

A charter, which the town doesn’t have, would create a town constitution and possibly establish a new form of government. Among the options being discussed are a board of selectmen with a town manager or a town council with a town manager, either of which would eliminate the annual town meeting.

The town currently has a Board of Selectmen form of government and holds a town meeting where citizens can vote on spending plans. The new charter also could include a provision that would allow voters to recall elected town officials. The Charter Commission has nine members – six elected, three appointed – and meets at 6 p.m. the first Wednesday and third Thursday of every month at the Town Office. The meetings are open to the public.
