PERU – “It looks to me like the town is losing money,” Selectman Chairman Andre St. Pierre said Monday as he studied the financial statement for the town.
“I think we need to have the auditor come to explain these numbers to us so we will be prepared to answer questions at the town meeting on the 18th,” St. Pierre continued. He was looking at what appeared to be a $661,000 depreciation in the town’s assets.
Selectman Kathy Hussey explained that town assets include roads, buildings and equipment. She agreed to try to have the auditor at the next meeting.
Selectman Bill Hine said, “We need to identify a trend in our assets to see where the town is heading.
He also said, “Peru has a 14 percent increase in school spending, and we can’t afford that.”
Road Commissioner David Gammon told the board that the road crew has been trying to thaw many of the frozen culverts before the spring rains. He also said that though there has not been a lot of snow this winter, he has been out with the sanding and plowing trucks 23 times, which was more than last year.
Hine asked him to be give the board a worksheet on any project that involved Federal Emergency Management Agency funds. Gammon said FEMA always checks a project when it is completed.
A building permit for a garage was approved for Samuel Curtis of Dickvale Road.
Hussey reported that Jim Pulsifer was working on the frozen pipes at the Rockemeka Grange Hall.
There will be a public hearing on referendum items at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at the Peru school.
