PORTLAND (AP) – Peter Wiley, chief of staff for congressman Tom Allen, died unexpectedly Monday in Florida. He was 58.
Wiley died from an apparent heart attack while spending a long weekend with his father, Harold, on the Gulf Coast, Allen’s office said.
“Peter Wiley was both my valued colleague and dear friend. My staff and I are all in shock at his untimely passing,” Allen said in a statement.
Wiley joined Allen’s office a year ago and led the Democrat’s staff through the Base Realignment and Closure process. Before that, Wiley worked for the National Governors Association and on Allen’s 1994 campaign.
He also served as chief operating officer of Gov. Angus King’s administration and on the Board of Environmental Protection under Gov. Joseph Brennan.
“One adjective – kind – is repeated by all who knew Peter. Peter was also a devoted husband, father, grandfather and son,” Allen said.
Wiley and his wife Betsy had recently purchased a home in Portland, and Wiley planned to split his time between Maine and Washington, D.C.
Details on services were to be released later. Wiley is survived by a daughter, Martha, and granddaughter, Grace, in addition to his wife and father.
