The Maine Class A Coaches’ Association announced Monday that Ted Fabian of Messalonskee, Sam Johnson of Cheverus and Kyle Baker of Kennebunk are the three finalists for this year’s Travis Roy Award, given annually to the best all-around graduating senior in Class A hockey.
Fabian led all Tier I skaters with 61 points this season while leading the Eagles to the Eastern Class A quarterfinals. His 27 goals were second only to Thornton’s Craig Perham (29), and his 34 assists were tops in Tier I and second overall to Gorham’s Mark Schmidt.
“He really has been our main guy every year for three years,” said Messalonskee coach Mike Latendresse. “He is very deserving to be one of the three finalists. To me, he is the best player in the state not just because of his scoring and his number of points, but because he is so versatile. He is as good on defense as he is on offense. He has the grit to play at any level, I think.”
Baker finished his season with 52 points, which topped Tier II. His 25 goals and 27 assists also led Tier II, while Johnson had a lower point total this season than last, but has been just as instrumental in the Stags’ success. Johnson finished this year with 27 points.
Also taken into consideration for this award are a players’ academics and their level of community service.
The award is named for Travis Roy, who played high school hockey for North Yarmouth Academy before moving on to prep school in Massachusetts and ultimately to Boston University. Roy was paralyzed 11 seconds into his first shift after falling head-first into the boards. He currently runs a foundation bearing his name and dedicated to medical studies that may one day enable him to walk again.
