ROXBURY – After complaints about roads and not raising any money last year to maintain them in the summer, residents Monday night voted to appropriate $5,000 for road repairs this year.

Kit Kearney said logging trucks were causing extensive damage to town roads.

“The town has to keep an eye on what is happening,” Kearney said. “Other towns are requiring loggers to post bonds to guarantee that they repair damage they cause to the roads,” he said.

Tim Gallant said the town could legally require bonds to be posted to protect town roads. Several residents spoke of the need for selectmen, who act as road commissioners, to protect the roads.

Selectmen had recommended a summer road budget of $3,000 for this year – there was no money raised last year – and the article was amended to $5,000 and approved. Money in the summer road fund is from the Federal Emergency Management Agency earmarked for specific projects.

Most of the approximately 60 residents in attendance enjoyed refreshments at the town social before the meeting.
