BANGOR (AP) – Police were investigating the death of a person whose body was found engulfed in flames on an embankment under a bridge Tuesday night.

A fire with heavy smoke was reported by a passing motorist shortly before 6 p.m. along the Harlow Street bridge where it crosses the Kenduskeag Stream, police said.

When police and firefighters got there, they found a body being consumed by flames, lying facedown on an embankment, said police Sgt. Donald Gagner. Gagner, who was one of the first people at the scene, said he peered over the side of the two-lane bridge and saw flames about 2 feet high around a human form.

“I saw a pair of white sneakers at the base of the feet, and flames were all around,” Gagner said. “It was not a pretty sight.”

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday in hopes of identifying the victim and the cause of death, police said.
