Sunday speaker

FARMINGTON – Pastor Susan Crane will present the message Sunday, March 12, at Henderson Memorial Baptist Church. Worship will begin at 10:30 a.m.; Sunday school classes for all ages at 9 a.m. All are welcome.

Chili cookoff

JAY – The Franklin County Chapter of United Bikers will sponsor a Chili Cookoff at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at Steppin’ Out, Route 4. The group is looking for contestants for its “Too Broke for Daytona Social” that will also include games and a pool tournament along with the chili. The public is welcome.

There is a $5 entry fee for those who wish to enter their chili in the cookoff. For more information, call Eric at 897-3039.

Brown Bag concert

FARMINGTON – Mt. Blue High School’s Syncopations will perform during the UMF Brown Bag concert series at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, in Nordica Auditorium.

The group will present choral selections that will be included in the London Concert tour. Included will be works by Bach, Faure, DeBussy as well as American folk and Broadway tunes.

The Syncopations will also feature several works that include Graybert and Karen Beacham on violin and clarinet as well as Mt. Blue High School senior Malina Dumas, also on violin.

The group will leave April 14 for a weeklong tour of London. They will perform Easter Sunday at the Burgh House in London and later in two joint concerts with the women’s choir at St. Mary’s School and with the Taplow Women’s Choir at St. Nicholas Church. There will be visits to Stonehenge, Oxford, Christ Church and the Royal Shakespeare Theater.

The Syncopations are directed by Carol Shumway and accompanied by Patricia Hayden.

Daffodils available

FARMINGTON – For those who forgot to order daffodils in advance of the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days campaign, Hannaford’s will sell bouquets of 10 from March 23 to 26 or while supplies last for a $7 donation. All proceeds will be given to the American Cancer Society.

Funds raised during Daffodil Days support the society’s programs and services. The goal for Maine for this year is $250,000. For more information or to volunteer to help with Daffodil Days, call Ray Kautzman at 373-3724.

Training tutors

FARMINGTON – Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset Counties, a nonprofit organization that trains tutors to teach people who want to improve their reading skills, will hold a basic reading tutor training workshop in Madison.

An orientation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1. at the American Legion Hall. Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, April 8 and 15. There is a $20 fee for materials, but scholarships are available.

There is a need for tutors in Somerset County, as students are waiting in Skowhegan, Madison and North Anson.
