BYRON – Residents will act on a proposed $97,000 municipal budget when they gather at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 13, at the Coos Canyon Schoolhouse.
But first, they will likely briefly celebrate the successful fundraising and purchase of the nine acres surrounding Coos Canyon, and pay special tribute to Selectman Steve Duguay who spearheaded the effort to buy the property.
“We are so pleased with the response when we put out the need to buy it,” said Selectman Bruce Simmons Wednesday afternoon.
He said a full-fledged celebration that could include a townwide picnic and other events will be held in a few weeks when the final documents are signed.
The town has purchased the popular picnic spot from Bayroot Limited Liability Corp. for $80,000. About $70,000 of that figure came from the Land for Maine’s Future fund and other state money, and the rest from donations.
Selectmen had been prepared to put an article on the town warrant asking for money if the final $10,000 wasn’t raised, but that wasn’t necessary.
Residents will elect a selectmen, town clerk, treasurer, tax collector and SAD 43 board representative from the floor. Incumbents Duguay, town clerk Rosie White Susbury, SAD 43 representative Anne Simmons-Edmunds and treasurer/tax collector Melissa Plourde are running for re-election, said Simmons.
The proposed $97,100 municipal budget is down about 3 percent from last year’s adopted figure of $99,900, thanks to lower snowplowing costs, cemetery maintenance and fewer office equipment purchases. Simmons said an additional $1,000 has been added to the town’s capital equipment account for the eventual purchase of a new plow truck and tractor.
