SARASOTA, Fla. – Hattie Bornstein Sherr, 100, formerly of Lewiston, died in Sarasota, Fla., on Saturday, March 4.

She was born on Jan. 15, 1906, and was an active member of many local charities during her lifetime.

She was the second of six children born to the late Abraham and Rebecca Berman Bornstein and lived in Lewiston living at 191 Russell St. until moving to Florida in November 1996. She was a homemaker and assisted her late husband, Samuel Sherr, in his tailor shop for many, many years. Mr. Sherr died on Nov. 1, 1984.

She was a member of Hadassah and the sisterhoods of both Beth Abraham Synagogue in Auburn and the former Beth Jacob Synagogue, which merged into the present Temple Shalom. Her late father was a founding member of Beth Abraham Synagogue and she was an enthusiastic volunteer one day a week for over 40 years at the Central Maine Medical Center coffe shop where she also served as manager.

She served actively as an executive member of the board of Beth Abraham Sisterhood and the local chapter of the B’Nai B’rith Women where she served for a number of years as treasurer. She was the beloved aunt of 10 nieces and nephews and scores of grandnieces and grandnephews who survive her.
