MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – A teacher’s aide at a Marlborough elementary school has been hospitalized with bacterial meningitis, a spokeswoman for the mayor said Thursday.
The aide had contact with only a few students, whose parents were told to immediately take their children to a doctor, said Karen Kisty, an executive aide in the Marlborough mayor’s office.
The family of the sick aide told officials at Richer Elementary School on Tuesday, Kisty said. The school notified local and state public health officials and sent letters to parents advising them to watch for signs of a fever or changes in their child’s behavior.
No students have reported getting sick, Kisty said.
The condition of the aide, who was not identified, is improving, Kisty said.
This case came days after a Lowell first grader died of bacterial meningitis, the first child under the age of 12 to die from the disease in Massachusetts since 2003.
