FARMINGTON – Area favorite Northfield will be joined by UMF’s Sole Expression and the Mt. Blue Show Choir Saturday in Nordica Auditorium for a performance benefiting the Care & Share Food Closet.

The Care & Share Food Closet serves people in nine Franklin County towns – Farmington, West Farmington, Farmington Falls, New Sharon, Chesterville, Temple, New Vineyard, New Portland and North New Portland.

Located in the Fairbanks School and run by volunteers, the Food Closet receives funding from local churches through the Farmington Area Ecumenical Ministry, as well as federal funding. But the money and surplus food from the government is less every year.

The Mt. Blue Show Choir consists of 18 energetic and talented SAD 9 students from grades 7 and 8, lead by music teacher Jim Perkins. They will perform their version of the Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Sole Expression is UMF’s only co-ed contemporary a cappella group. They first formed in January 2005, under the guidance of Dennis Hayes, singing modern rock and pop and 1950s doo-wop in fun arrangements featuring vocal percussion. The group includes the best singers from UMF, and many of the members have appeared with the UMF Chamber Choir.

Northfield has been performing, with various singers, for more than 20 years. The group performs European Renaissance and Early American music, hoping to bring voices from history back to life. For this concert, they will sing songs about eating, drinking and merry-making, with a good dose of humor thrown in.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Nordica Auditorium is at the University of Maine at Farmington. Admission is by donation – whatever you can afford. A guideline for donations is to think about how much you would spend for a meal at your favorite restaurant. If you cannot come to the concert, but would still like to donate to the Food Closet, please call 778-3833.
