LEWISTON – Helen Murray, R.N., retired from St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center after nearly 32 years of service. Murray started in the maternity ward, now the family birthing unit, at St. Mary’s in 1975.

When asked how many babies she’s helped deliver over the years, Murray couldn’t come up with a number.

She said there are “too many to count, but hundreds would be a safe estimate.” She said, “It’s always fun when I’m helping deliver a baby and I realize I helped deliver one of the baby’s parents.”

Murray said one of the biggest changes she’s seen in her profession is the advent of midwives. She said, “They have had a significant and positive effect on birthing.”

Murray’s co-workers and former patients said she will truly be missed. They said her experience and pleasant personality are unparalleled.
