NEW GLOUCESTER – A proposed budget of $19 million for 2006-07 is under review by the SAD 15 Board of Directors. The figure is $900,300 more than this fiscal year.

New positions account for $164,242 of the increase. A full-time literacy teacher at Gray-New Gloucester High School in Gray, a classroom teacher at Memorial School in New Gloucester and a full-time gifted and talented teacher are proposed. A part-time education technician is sought for Burchard Dunn School in New Gloucester and a half-time grounds worker for the district are also requested.

The total increase for salaries for current positions would be $483,448 in the next fiscal year; the increase in benefits for the next year is $178,657; heating oil and bottled gas increases total $93,389; and vehicle fuels would increase $59,750. Special education contracts would require an additional $31,800; and mandated programs for gifted and talented will require $55,966 more, according to the draft budget.

The board, budget advisory panel and district finance committee will review the budget this month. Next month, the budget will be reviewed by Gray and New Gloucester municipal leaders. A districtwide public hearing on the final budget is set April 26 in New Gloucester.

On May 3, the school board will voted on a final budget and prepare for a referendum vote in the two towns on June 13.
