LEWISTON – An informational meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pettingill Elementary School to review the school construction process and to seek public comment on available sites for a new school.

The two sites under consideration are situated at 601 College St., referred to as the Cote property, and 135 Hogan Road, known as the Mendros property.

Members of the Building Committee, city and school officials, and the school architect will be there to respond to questions. Officials urge the public to offer input about where a new school would best serve the needs of Lewiston children and the community.

Pettingill Elementary School was built 79 years ago to accommodate 250 students. It now houses 314 students. The physical education closet was turned into a work space for teachers. The library is housed in a portable unit. The building is on 2.5 acres, a site too small for a modern school.

Those conditions got Pettingill on the state’s school construction list as one of 13 schools that will share $200 million.

The first step in the process is to pick a site, according to school officials. Other details, including cost, are not yet known.
