JAY – What is offered in the town of Jay?

That’s what members of the Jay Development Committee want to find out so they can share the information with others.

The committee of nine members and two alternates was established about 18 months ago by the Board of Selectmen to encourage development, Chairman Paul Gilbert said Thursday.

It can be development in any sector: housing, transportation, economic, arts, manufacturing and social, he said.

Now, the committee members have developed a survey and will be visiting different areas in town to find out what types of businesses, organizations and services are available. They’ll also be looking at census information, Gilbert said.

Since the effort is a big order, they’re also looking for volunteers, Gilbert said, to lend a hand surveying people in the town. Anyone interested in helping can contact the Town Office at 897-6785.

The committee is conducting an inventory of assets, which will include individual home occupations such as day-care centers and tax preparers, Town Manager Ruth Marden said Thursday. They also plan find out what space is available in town.

Eventually, Marden said, they want to have a resource so that if someone is looking to locate here or is unaware of the town’s resources, he or she could find out what is available.

“We look at that as being a development tool also because people want to locate in an area that can support a business,” she said.

It will an ongoing document that will be updated as a new business comes to town, she said.

Among the questions the survey asks: Do people want their business or organization on the town’s Web site? Would they like a link on the town Web site? Is there anything the committee can do to assist the business or organization?

Once the information is gathered, it will be put together and be available at the Town Office.
