Robert Fain, the Sabattus man accused of passing bogus checks in three states and then trying to run down police in Tennessee who tried to question him last week, will remain jailed in Tennessee at least until the end of the year.

In Roane County on Monday, the 48-year-old waived a scheduled court hearing, meaning the case against him will not be heard again until May when the next grand jury gathers in that county.

The matter of Fain’s extradition back to Maine is not expected to be considered again until December, according to Kingston police Lt. Gary Nelson.

Fain, accused of passing more than $60,000 worth of bad checks around Maine, New Hampshire and Florida, was arrested in Tennessee earlier this month after a court officer he was dating turned him in.

Kingston police who arrested Fain said he rammed a police car and a private citizen’s car with a stolen truck and tried to run them down when they came to question him in the parking lot of the Roane County Courthouse on March 3.

He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of hit and run, one count of reckless driving, one count of reckless endangerment, felony evading, theft of property and being a fugitive from justice.

Warrants for his arrest are outstanding in Maine, New Hampshire and Florida, according to Topsham Detective Mark Gilliam.

Police in Topsham said Fain wrote a check for $13,000 on a closed account to pay for a pair of ATVs at a Topsham business.
