LEWISTON – A nun-chucks-wielding local man stole $5 from one man after robbing another man of the martial arts weapon, police said.

Shane Clifford Edwards, 21, of 141 Pierce St. was arrested shortly after midnight Monday and charged with assault and two counts of robbery.

Edwards, who is known on the streets as “Fingers,” tried to rob a man walking down Main Street, police wrote in court documents. When the man said he was broke, Edwards instead took the man’s nun-chucks – a martial-arts weapon that consists of two sticks connected at their ends with a short chain or rope.

Edwards shoved a second man to the ground repeatedly, scraping the man’s arm, police reports stated.

Edwards was joined by a 14-year-old on a bicycle when he approached a man on College Street who was walking home from a convenience store. Edwards demanded money, showing the nun-chucks and threatening to kill the man, according to police. That man opened his wallet and handed Edwards a $5 bill. Edwards took it and ran away, police said.

Edwards next walked up to a car stopped at a light at Main and Middle streets. He tapped on the driver’s side window and asked for a cigarette. The man said he didn’t smoke. “C’mon, give me a cigarette,” Edwards said. The man tried to ignore him. “OK, give me your car then,” Edwards said, according to police. He tried to open the car door. The man tried to drive off but his car stalled when police arrived. The boy, who held the nun-chucks for Edwards while he tried to steal the car, was not charged.

The victims picked out Edwards in a photo lineup.

He was held at Androscoggin County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail. He was arraigned Monday in 8th District Court.

He was convicted twice of assault, once in 2004 and once last year, according to records at the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office.
